The 4 week 'Moving Online' course was created in response to a growing need to find a method of faculty development for motivated instructors intending to teach online. The course was created for instructors who have never taught online before and may or may not have any experience with a Learning Management System (LMS).

Moving Online guides instructors through the course design process while learning technical skills, and engage in dialogue with colleagues from a student perspective. In 4 weeks, participants move together through four modules: Introduction and the 3 C's (communication, collaboration, and community), Course Design - Content, Course Design -- Outcomes and Assessment, and lastly Course Building. The modules are designed for instructors to explore the content and participate in facilitated, guided discussions with their colleagues.

The 'Moving Online' course is cohort-based which means that participants cover the content together and can benefit from collaborating. The workload has been distributed so that each week will require about 3 hours spread out over each week.

Topics Include:

  • Transitioning to Teaching in the Online Environment
  • Communicating, Collaborating and Community
  • Developing Learning Outcomes and Assessments
  • Developing Course Content
  • Course Building

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the duration of this course?

'Moving Online' runs for four weeks, and the modules will take one week each. In planning your time for the course, it is advantageous to log at least twice per week. This will allow you to contribute to the activities, discussions and conversations that will develop throughout the week.

How does this course work?

The 'Moving Online' course is cohort-based which means that participants cover the content together and can benefit from collaborating. It also means that the learning experience for each participant is dependant on the timely contributions of the others. In other words, for you to get the most out of this course, you will need to stay in synch with the schedule so that you can benefit from your colleagues.

How often do the participants meet?

We will also be meeting synchronously (at the same time) once during the course using Elluminate Live!, a web conferencing system. This will not be mandatory but it is beneficial for those who may want to incorporate the tool into a course. The times for these sessions will be established together so as to accommodate everyone's schedule.
